The World
Information about the world of Azzaria.
Plants & Living Creatures
The plants and living creatures that exist in Azzaria are the same as the ones that exist in our world, with the exception of modern drugs. Many plants have mystical or healing properties and are used by all the Races of Azzaria. Tame animals are kept by both rich and poor folk. The animals kept by the poor are for practical uses, while the rich favour exotic and pretty animals.
Transport & Technology
Modern Technology does not exist in Azzaria, and only the basic technology is used, such as steam power. Weapons used are made of natural materials, and common weapons include swords, daggers, clubs, axes, maces, bows, shields, etc. Transport is also as primitive, with horses, ponies and donkeys being used as transport throughout Azzaria. In Zazelle the Protectors have been known to ride camels and elephants. Carriages, wagons and litters are also used.
Crime & Defence
Each Race has an army and a city guard for their capital cities. The army consists of a mixture of different warriors from the Race. Please see the individual Race pages for more information about warriors. In each Capital City there are always criminals working, and the city guard does their best to stop them. The army responds to threats against the Region as a whole, such as war, attacks and raids by the other Races.
Children & Families
Children take the name of their family when they reach maturity (16 years of age). Family names differ depending on Race. The Imperials take the name of their family; William D'Cor. The Elves take their names from their lands or place of birth; Dracan of the Golden Oak. The Celts take the name of their father or mother; Sara, daughter of Maeve. The Protectors take the name of family line and their clan; Rallik (name) Lang (family line) Winterspring (clan name).
There are ways for women to ward against pregnancy or encourage pregnancy in the form of charms and herbs. A woman can become pregnant any time after they have had their first monthly bleeding, which takes place between the ages of 14 and 16.
Children are important to all the Races, and this does make them a target in raids, especially in the areas closest to the Region's borders. In those areas most missing children end up being slaves to the Protectors.
Currency and Trade
Each Region uses the same currency; gold, silver and copper coins, the lowest being copper. The coins from each Region are marked differently, imprinted with the current ruler.
There is very little trade between the four Regions. Some trade happens along the borders occasionally, but for the main part each Race trades only within it's own Region. The Elves specialise in wood and a fine type of silk found only in their Region. The Imperials deal in magic and knowledge, and have some of the finest weapon smiths. The Celts are a simpler folk, trading in wares from their farms, and ore. Little is known about the Protectors except that they are excellent bargainers, and trade in slaves. Each of the four Races would benefit from a peaceful alliance with other Races for trade purposes.
Language
Each Race speaks a different language. Some scholars and traders of each Race have studied the other languages from texts or from prisoners.
Food
In Azzaria the food is similar to the food of our world. The Elves prefer food from nature, mainly plants, vegetables and fish. The Celts are similar, eating what food their land provides along with some baked goods, stews and preserves. By far the Imperials have the most varied taste in food. They love food with a rich taste, seasoned with herbs and spices. Imperials have a very sweet tooth as well. The Protectors live off the land as well, and their diet is based heavily on fish and meat.
